While being anxious of water getting above your head and knowing that you can’t swim is a normal reaction, it is important that you fight this feeling and remain calm. Panicking and screaming will not only consume your air and energy but will also lead you to potentially swallow in water.

One of the best tips on how to survive in water if you can’t swim is to float. Your body will naturally float when you remain calm and relaxed. You can lay on your back and try to make yourself comfortable in the water. Tilt your head slightly backwards so your legs will float to the water’s surface. When you do this properly, you will remain buoyant.
Alternatively, you can also perform a Deadman’s float. The difference is that this involves your face facing down towards the water. However, the first type of float where you lie on your back is much better than the Deadman’s float because you will be able to take as many breaths as you can.
3. Make use of floatation devices.
The simplest way to survive in water without swimming is to use floating device. Simply stay afloat if you don’t know how to swim by using floaters such as, life jackets, and other floatation devices. If you are swimming in natural bodies of water that have currents, do not rely on foam noodles and other pool toys to stay afloat, but rather use certified floatation devices properly, especially if your goal is to survive in deep water, or pool.
4. Improvise if you don’t have a floatation device.
How to survive in water without swimming can be very difficult for some, but when your life is on the line you must improvise to survive. There are many sources in the internet which teach non-swimmers how to create improvised floatation devices. One way is to use your fishing boots as floaters by turning them upside down such that they become filled with air and then placing one under each arm.
You can also use the seat of your pants as a floatation device by tying the ankles together and then chopping air into the waistband.
5. Tread in the water with a friend or someone who knows how to swim.
